Medicare Open Payments Program

As a part of the Affordable Care Act, Medicare is enacting an “Open Payment” program September 30th. Under the program, manufacturers of drugs, devices, biologicals, and medical supplies must report any payments, gifts, or other “transfers of value” they make to physicians or teaching hospitals.

Medicare will list the details of this information on a public website in order to show these industry relationships. Their goal is to discourage “dishonest influence on research, education, and clinical decision-making” and “stop conflicts of interest that can harm patients and their care.”

Providers have a short window until September 10th to review the information listed about their practice. To
